Chapter Nine

Vivian threw open the closet door with fire in her violet eyes. Which I’m pretty sure were much more vibrant due to the colored contacts I’d seen near the fake eyelashes. Everything about her was fake, except perhaps the fury she was exuding. I’d never seen anyone’s nostrils flare so big. I mean, like, wow. She might have even been able to shove a super-size tampon up one.

“Hi, Vivian,” I sang and held up the frame. What else could I do? “Just came by to get the picture you borrowed.” I gave a her a sickly sweet smile.

“Jake’s wife is here?” The unknown woman sounded like she’d won the lottery. “Get the cameras in here.”

No. No. No.

Vivian panicked, grabbing me and Abs, yanking us out of her closet, and slamming the door shut. Before anything could be said or Abs and I could run for it, there was a camera crew in place. It was kind of scary. We’re talking lights, camera, action.

I was finally able to put a face to the voice. A quite short woman in stilettos with a blunt blonde haircut was directing everyone before she turned her sights on me. Her smile reminded me of the Grinch when he decided to steal Christmas. I actually reached for my heart. I had a feeling she could rip it out of my chest while it was still beating.

Beau took a protective stance in front of Vivian, Abs, and me. “Tera,”—I’m assuming she was the Grinch—“there’s nothing to see here. Our friends were just leaving.”

Beau was my new favorite person.

Tera arched her left brow so high I thought it might stick like that. “Do your friends normally steal things from you?”

I bravely stepped to the side so I could look Tera in the eye. “Excuse me, I didn’t steal anything.” I held up the picture. “This belongs to me and my husband, but you already knew that.”

“Did I?” she said as if daring me to contradict her. “As far as I know, your husband gifted that to Vivian. Isn’t that right, Vivian?”

Vivian’s cheeks flushed for half a second before she stepped out and straightened her tiny black cocktail dress. “Of course.”

I glared at Vivian. “Jake would have never given you this photo.”

“You don’t know your husband very well,” she spat back.

Those were fighting words, but I realized I was on camera. “Tera, is it? You don’t have permission to film me. I know I would have to sign a waiver of some sort.”

Her smug, tight-from-plastic-surgery face dropped.

“Great.” Beau clapped his hands together. “We’ll see you later, Kasie and friend.”

I grabbed Abs, ready to hightail it out of there.

“Wait.” Tera held out her hand like a crossing guard trying to stop traffic. “Don’t you think you should call the police, Vivian?”

I swallowed down my heart, lungs, and everything I’d eaten last week.

“We’re not calling the police,” Beau stated matter-of-factly.

“Vivian, are you sure?” Tera coaxed. “I mean, these women violated your home.” Tera gave me the sleaziest smile. “And she’s accusing you of lying.
